🧵Feedback was something that felt like a waste of time for me for a long time with my students. It seemed like I would spend hours providing it only to have it be ignored. I blamed the kids, when I should have been looking at my practice. Here's what I've changed... 1/

“Share a high and/or low from your week so far” has been one of my favorite SEL check-ins this year. One kiddo shared his frustration about an unannounced test in his last class, 8 others seconded this, and they processed their emotions as a group.

Grateful to spend last night with so many loved ones as my dad, Mark Vander Ploeg, was honored for lifetime service to his alma mater, ⁦Macalester College⁩. The evening was a tribute to teaching, learning and community, and reminded me what a privilege it is to serve others!

"Kids usually sleep, listen to music & spend time on their phones, all of which, evidence shows, won't make them feel better. Instead, students are taught CBT & mindfulness skills, like reframing a situation & stopping negative thoughts/feelings." The New York Times nytimes.com/2022/10/06/edu…

We love being back in Santa Fe kicking off the Santa Fe Seminar — a chance for school leaders to recharge, reflect on their journey as leaders, and reconnect with their purpose.

The The Langley School STEAM Fair is coming up this Saturday (2/4) from 10-12. Our theme for this year is The "Power" of a Story! Each #STEAM Activity will feature a literary connection to a children's book. Check out some of the books that were used to inspire our activities!

Schools may think they want me to present on “bullying,” but after we talk, they get why that’s too narrow. To change kids’ behavior, we 1st need to normalize social churn, demystify popularity, operationalize kindness, help them assume good intent, & ID when & why they’re mean.
