Tip for the incoming #PhD students as you choose rotations and ultimately, a home lab. Talk to the people in the lab about the environment, mentorship, etc. But very importantly, talk to the people who didn’t join the lab. There’s always two sides to every story! #Academia

I'm not sure who needs to hear this, but giving a mentee space is not: ❌ Ignoring mentee requests for feedback/help ❌ Being unavailable to meet ❌ Dropping the ball on critical deadlines (letters, applications, etc.) 👎 Neglect ≠ supporting independence

I’ve said it before and l’ll say it again, neglect is a form of trainee abuse. If you don’t have the bandwidth to effectively mentor, don’t take trainees. And if you see neglect, don’t say it’s due to busy PIs or big labs - that’s excusing bad behavior & discounting the trainee
