“There is no searing politics here, just a desire for basic services – a bus that runs a bit later in the evening, a future for their kids.”

My 13 year old daughter and her friends decided to go to the shops by bus.

They arrived at the bus stop just before 2 with a bus due. That bus never came and these were the next 3. Still no sign of the not-cancelled one.

How does this support teens’ independence?

Well said, Polly Curtis. Investing in social infrastructure and community networks should include creating conditions for children to play out in their neighbourhoods. Plenty of evidence to show how much this can benefit children, famiilies and communities.

His answer was no, children are not a priority. Concern’s about children’s play had a significant influence on postwar housing, particularly through the work of the Ministry of Housing & Local Government. Children are not even on the agenda of today’s equivalent department.

A truly lovely video of Birmingham councillor Councillor David Barker learning to ride a bike as an adult, and not only succeeding but finding joy, freedom and new parts of his city!
