Thinking: Much of our day-to-day joy hinges on our ability to accept ourselves as we are - flawed, edgy, and a continuous source of errors of judgment/learning opportunities (depending on how we view it) - versus that fictional perfect self we get drawn to imagining.

Periodic reminder to self: Do not fear mistakes. Instead, if we must go down the path of fear, fear only – i) the repetition of the same mistake because we didn’t learn from it and ii) the absence of a creative, constructive, and corrective response to the mistake.

Controlling for level of skill/capability, the strength of a team is proportional to the percentage of folks within the team who'd put the team's interest ahead of their own. When it is <50% => disaster. Conversely, when it exceeds 80%, you're generally looking at greatness.

Why over-communication matters in a period of change - "It is difficult to get a person to understand something when their salary depends on them not understanding it."

Happiness explained, in 37 words. “Money matters but less than we think and not in the way that we think. Family is important. So are friends. Envy is toxic. So is excessive thinking. Beaches are optional. Trust is not. Neither is gratitude.”

Learning: When doing the work, focus on the process. When presenting the work, focus on outcomes and lessons learnt. The former ensures we emerge from the experience with learning and peace of mind. And, the latter does the same for those being presented to.

Fascinating chart Our World in Data team! The single best argument made for the importance of self-compassion. Be kind to yourself or the many hours you're going to spend with yourself as you grow older are going to be * awkward *. :-)

One of the things you learn as a scientist is the ability to look at a plot and think, "that just doesn't look right." That's the feeling I got when I saw this plot that Lomborg is currently pushing.
