Welcome to American reporting on Taiwan and Japan, where leaders are constantly accused of being provocative. Contrast with Western reporting on the Baltics, who are always presented as plucky democracies and never as provocative.

Jimmy Lai’s sentencing exposes the Hong Kong national security law for what it is—a tool of political persecution under China’s “one country, two systems” that tramples human rights & freedom of press. This abuse of judicial power must end. Taiwan calls for his immediate release.

Taiwan is determined to invest in peace. Building on a decade of progress—including a 14% salary raise for our troops & expanded military allowances 23 times across various categories—our proposed US$40B special defense budget further proves that resolve. Security cannot wait.

Koizumi is doing a good job as Defense Minister. Hopefully he continues to speak up for the JSDF and 'jieikan' and give them the respect they deserve from the Japanese public and Japan's 'ruling elites' -- who for too long belittled and humiliated JSDF patriots.

I don't see this as violating the Six Assurances. But the way Trump phrases "I'm talking with [Xi] about it" implies the issue is up for negotiation, which sends a concerning signal to Taiwan. This shouldn't surprise anyone who has followed Trump's foreign policy approach:

There's a debate on X about whether Trump's statement actually violates the Six Assurances to Taiwan. My view is that it does. Yes, the original 1982 assurances were declassified in Trump 1.0. The line in that declassified document was, the United States "has not agreed to
