871,467 people in Louisiana live below the poverty line. Drug abuse, trauma, social and emotional needs—these have all become huge contributions to poor reading abilty and poor performace. Children won’t be able to learn if their basic needs are not met.

Teaching is a relational activity. You have to reach them before you can teach them. Dare to care. It will be amazing what you will find out about your students and how much more they will do for you if they know you really care about them.

A teacher can be the authority figure without having an authoritative classroom culture. A principal can be an authority figure without having an authoritative school culture. Respecting authority isn’t about compliance, its about contribution. Schools won’t thrive on compliance.
