Thanks to Louise Kinross Holland Bloorview for this thoughtful interview. Our findings might be based on parent carers in England, but the message is global. In every country around the world, disabled children & their parents need better support. hollandbloorview.ca/stories-news-e…

I’ve heard from an exhausted mum who has devoted her life to #caring for her child with highly complex needs. She’s now been told by Social Services they are likely to lose vital #DirectPayments. If any #UnpaidCarers have experience of how to navigate this situation please DM.

2 months in PICU has left me feeling like I've attained some new level of the SEN parenting experience. Like I've suddenly been awarded 3rd Dan parent carer-ing 🤣 But the bummer is, I never wanted my experience to progress this way, and I'm bloody certain A didn't either.

"As a #carer, I am privileged to be able to work. I hang on by my fingernails every day, so I can keep the only thing I have left of my life. I’m in a position millions of people will find themselves in at some point in their lives, & any legislation that eases that burden..⤵️

I’m currently caring full-time and receiving carers allowance so I couldn’t resist working out how caring compares to the minimum income standard. Assuming the max work income allowed + top up UC, unpaid carers income is less than 60% of what Joseph Rowntree Foundation find is needed to live well.

Next Monday, a statutory public inquiry will open into the deaths of mental health inpatients in Essex. Without the courage, persistence and determination of bereaved families and survivors campaigning - the inquiry would not be happening. bit.ly/4dOzQKb

So pleased that this work by Dr Siobhan O'Dwyer was highlighted in last night’s adjournment debate by Wendy Chamberlain It’s vital research that highlights why every government department has a part to play in any future Carers Strategy ⬇️

Two papers submitted today. One on burnout in parents caring for disabled children. The other on homicides & homicide-suicides perpetrated by unpaid carers. Hoping for swift, positive reviews🤞🏻🤞🏻so we can start using the findings to inform better policy & practice for carers.
