Here's a throwback to what I think is the only meeting where all of Holly Unwin's supervisory team met at once in 2021! Bravo again, Holly!
Finally finding time to work on the calorimetric study of the IDDP-1 borehole rhyolite glass. Here, with LMU Volcanology, I'm asking: how has the rheology and structural relaxation behaviour of Krafla's rhyolitic glass/melts changed from c. 2 km depth to the Earth's surface?
I can spend hours staring at #lava fragments dancing above a crater rim. The way they move, fall, interact with each other, wrap around themselves is just hypnotizing.
Just pure abstract volcanic art.

I really love catching up with Jeremie Vasseur (LMU Volcanology)! This time we’re working on the next steps in our work on crystal-bearing magma rheology, together with Yan Lavallée and Don Dingwell.
Betty Scheu (LMU Volcanology) is excited to show us Durham Volcanology visitors some of her lab capabilities. Ed Llewellin, Betty, Don Dingwell, and I are discussing explosive volcanic eruption dynamics.
Jeremie, Corrado Cimarelli and Markus gave their presentations in a crowded room. Great to see the interest in “recent advances in volcanology”, convened by Luca Caricchi and our Ulrich Küppers.
Julia had excellent discussions in the lively poster session.
Why do peanuts 'dance' when dropped in beer? Find out with this paper from #RSOS : ow.ly/IGTG50P57I1 | #MaterialsScience #ChemicalEngineering #Volcanology
A wonderful image courtesy of Anthony Jones (a Durham Earth Science PhD student working on our peanut fun projects) who used AI to merge peanuts and beer in a way I guess none of us expected. Fantastic.
I’m enjoying reading Annabelle Foster’s draft work on viscous sintering dynamics in rhyolites. Perfect way to spend a stormy Saturday lunchtime.
‼️ Massive lava outbreak at
Litli-Hrútur from the RUV livestream. And another one has just started 👀😱
Wowww!

Goldschmidteers, do come to see my poster at the poster session tonight at stall #185! #Goldschmidt2023
The amazing footage and imagery from the previous Fagradalsfjall eruptions were astounding and led some of our Durham Volcanology team and others to propose that tourist content may be scientifically useful! Perhaps the new eruption will put this to test? Link:
