🚨 California: Today, 48,000 academic workers with @uaw2865, Student Researchers United-UAW, and UAW Local 5810 are on strike across the University of California system! Workers are seeking living wages that match the cost of living in California. ✊ #1u abc7.com/uc-strike-univ…

At 5am this morning, striking Academic Workers formed a picket line at a construction site at UC Berkeley and successfully shut it down by talking to the workers from OE, IBEW, and LiUNA. They are honoring our picket line and won't be building today. #Solidarity #UAWonStrike

We took over a meeting where Vice Provost of Academic Personnel & Programs & other UC leaders were discussing "academic worker compensation & diversity." When we told them our experiences working at UC, they squirmed in their seats & had security escort them out of the building.

An impact of the UC strike that hasn't received as much attention: gas delivery pickets. Bc of delivery delays, physicians had to power down experiments, frozen reagents had thawed & there was concern about 150,000 specimens at Museum of Vertebrate Zoology berkeleyside.org/2022/12/09/uc-…

Delighted to see our work on time crystals, led by Will Beatrez published Nature Physics! Main takeaway: we implemented a protocol with greatly enhanced throughput for measurement, thanks to hyperpolarization and inductive #NMR readout. College of Chemistry doi.org/10.1038/s41567… 1/4

Discrete time crystals are a non-equilibrium phase of matter in which the system undergoes stable periodic motion (in time), borrowing from the notion of crystallinity as a rigid pattern in space. The striped pattern in this phase diagram shows the time-crystalline phase. 2/4

Our approach uses a pulse sequence containing two inter-leaved pulse trains. The data shows clear formation and melting of time-crystalline order. This is the first example of a time crystal that you can watch in real time -- with a lifetime on the order of 10+ seconds! 3/4

We hope the exquisite level of coherent control offered by nuclear spins can inspire more work using Floquet engineering techniques in the condensed matter physics and nuclear magnetic resonance communities! (Movie shows time crystal forming near flip angles +/-1pi) 4/4

Excited to share that our review paper on studying emerging non-equilibrium phenomena in quantum matter using novel ultrafast spectroscopies has been published in NatRevMaterials 🥳🐻 College of Chemistry Berkeley Lab nature.com/articles/s4157…

Pleased to see this work in PRL. We observe an electron relaxing nuclei over several nanometers around it. Implications for #DNP and spin discrimination at nm length scales. #NMRchat College of Chemistry journals.aps.org/prl/abstract/1…

Our work has been published to Nano Letters! We demonstrate a technique to embed diamonds containing NV centers into microscale 3D printed structures and measure the temperature and magnetic field inside of these structures. pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/ac…

Our work is published in The Journal of Chemical Physics and chosen as Editors' feature and journal cover article! We model hyperpolarization flow in a cascade of avoided crossings, and use it for "ESR via NMR" shorturl.at/fAFO2 Cool fact - all authors here are undergraduates College of Chemistry

Check out our new preprint from College of Chemistry with Jonathan Breeze and Reimer Lab! We show how photoexcited electron spins in pentacene/p-terphenyl crystals can be used as quantum sensors at ambient conditions. #NMRchat (1/4) arxiv.org/abs/2402.13898
