There are not 142 race-based laws on the statute books in South Africa in 2025. That's a lie. Whether Elon Musk, Donald Trump or The Institute of Race Relations say it is, it remains a lie. There are laws on the statute books to fix the consequences of historical discrimination.

Diplomatic nous is not Cyril’s strong point. He jumped to answer a question not meant for him. And the tape rolled. Diplomatic own goal. #CyrilRamaphosa

The Washington visit just imploded. 🤷🏽‍♂️ Our President sits, totally embarrassed by his own goal. Trump came prepared. Cyril did not. #CyrilRamaphosa

How I miss the stature and straight talking of Nelson Mandela with world leaders. He did not tolerate lies. This is begging bowl diplomacy. It sets South Africa up to become enslaved. #ovaloffice

Despite my horror at the diplomatic own goal South Africa scored in the #ovaloffice today, I am proud that the diverse team of business & icons (mainly Afrikaners) & government gave their best to rescue the poor performance of both Presidents. There is a lesson in this.

Cyril’s comment on the white crosses video in the #ovaloffice: “That I’ve never seen.” As a South African, that infuriated me. That’s a well-known video. All deaths should matter to a President. From Mitchell’s Plain to Musina. It was a low point of his Oval Office performance.

"Six years ago, I found myself face to face with a white farmer preparing for the government to take his land. This did not happen in South Africa. It was in South Texas, and it was because of Trump." The New York Times nytimes.com/2025/05/21/us/…

Three Afrikaners & a Trade Unionist made South Africa proud today. They showed patriotism & frankness. Off the cuff. No prepared speech. Awkward but honest. Just soul talk. Something in that alchemy is part of the future we long for. I hope we don’t thrash that magic. #ovaloffice

What became clear of the current US administration is that it’s run by: 1. Endless repeats of Misinformation. 2. Lack of dialogue. Just “made for TV” moments of humiliation. 3. Facts don’t matter. Just rinse and repeat lies. 4. Race is big and the WH has a total bias one way.

Donald Trump is unhinged. There’s no decent dialogue. Ever. Just praise & adulation by sycophants. When he’s challenged, you get viciously slapped down (NBC) or humiliated (Zelensky, Ramaphosa et al). But one thing he knows: his base is busy leaving him. More about this later.

Oom Bey, with a rain-drawn tear running down his cheek, weeping for the humiliation. It’s never stopped. But perhaps his soaked forehead tells us that we too have not done enough to build a great country. We should have been a better country. For everyone.

The #OvalOffice is becoming like a royal court, where Trump operates like a king. He dismisses who he is displeased with. He has the final word on all of life. His court jesters applaud him. Each day America becomes a more dangerous place for democracy and the rule of law.
