“This youth power is so urgent and I thank you for showing up year after year making the demand for a cop free school system in our city.” - Council Member Shahana Hanif 90% of school policing incidents in NYC target Black & Latinx students, even though they only make up 66% of the school
Our student leaders presenting Chancellor David C. Banks’s team with a check for the $100M in funds that could be used for mental health care & restorative if the City were to start divesting from school policing! #policefreeschools #CareNotCriminalization
BREAKING: Youth leaders deliver a $98M check to the Executive Assistant to the Chancellor David C. Banks calling on him and the Mayor Eric Adams to DIVEST from school policing, and INVEST in their futures. #CareNotCriminalization #PoliceFreeSchools
“Ava Harris, a high school senior, lamented the funding for metal detectors & bulletproof vests for police at her school which she said is in need of classroom repairs & employs just a single college counselor.” #policefreeschools #CareNotCriminalization cityandstateny.com/politics/2024/…
Check out CM Jen Gutiérrez & our youth leader Camilla’s piece in the New York Daily News on the need to start divesting from school policing now & putting that money towards programs that actually help students thrive!#policefreeschools nydailynews.com/2024/06/17/sch…
🙌We're so proud of our youth leader, Camilla's collab w/ Jen Gutiérrez on this article in the New York Daily News! Our kids need a safe space to learn & we won't achieve this while police takes over schools across NY. Time to divest from school policing!🛑 nydailynews.com/2024/06/17/sch…
“It’s time to stop sending cops to handle problems that should be managed by social workers, guidance counselors, or mental health practitioners.” CM Jen Gutiérrez & UYC youth leader Camilla’s oped in New York Daily News. ✊🏽✊🏾✊🏿 nydailynews.com/2024/06/17/sch…
It’s time to cut wasteful NYPD spending & invest in services that truly benefit our communities. ✄ NYPD press budget by 50%, #DisbandSRG, NYPD out of mental health response + more! We urge New York City Council to take action for #CareNotCriminalization now: bit.ly/FY25BudgetJust…
In 2007, we worked w/ DOE to create Student Success Centers to provide college & career readiness for all kids. Now, Mayor Eric Adams is slated to cut this program entirely—denying us the skills we need to excel in our next chapter. New York City Council pls don’t let this happen. #CareNotCuts
For Mayor Eric Adams & Chancellor David C. Banks, college & career readiness doesn’t mean giving us the tools to achieve our dreams. It means becoming school cops. Why else would they cut Student Success Centers from the budget, while funding “assistant school cops” to recruit us to join the NYPD?
"I believe that Student Success Centers (SSCs) really do help students find their calling and figure out what they want to do after high school. I want to ask the Mayor Eric Adams to please stop cutting down funds for community high schools, and to stop cutting down funds for SSCs." -
"It frustrates me that our Mayor Eric Adams would rather prioritize bulletproof vests, new police scanners, and vacant school cop positions, that if cut, would be more than enough to fund our Student Success Centers (SSCs)." - Keith 30+ high schools enrolling 18K students could lose
We also want to give a special shout-out to the students who rallied, testified before New York City Council, spoke at press conferences, and shared their experiences at town halls all year to make sure elected leaders understood what it would mean to roll back or eliminate key programs.
Today, along w/ community organizations and elected allies, we are calling out the Mayor Eric Adams's dangerous and anti-democratic ballot initiatives, Props 2-6. New Yorkers know a sneaky power grab when they see one. Take the pledge to defend democracy and vote NO on Props 2-6.
NYers who care about public safety and want to hold the NYPD accountable, or make changes that will improve our city’s safety, already face an uphill climb. The Mayor Eric Adams has resisted all attempts at accountability, and now wants to make it even harder to pass any legislation
#FBF to last week when we traveled to DC for People's Coalition for Safety and Freedom & Center for Popular Democracy💥’s Freedom Week of Action to demand an end to the school-to-prison pipeline & true safety in our communities! ✊🏽✊🏾✊🏿
