A reminder that there are no “good” gig companies. Grubhub (in the US) is no better than DoorDash, and Lyft is no better than Uber. They all operate through pure, ugly exploitation of a majority people of color workforce—but with different branding.

My ⁦Uber⁩ driver didn’t put two hands on the wheel, not even once, during a long and winding 30-minute trip yesterday. We almost crashed twice; one of the misses with an 18-wheeler that would have killed us both.

I’m working in a remote area, and I was worried that if I asked the driver to please put his hands on the wheel, he could end the trip and leave me stranded in the middle of a field. I was also worried that he could rate me down, affecting my future ability to book Uber rides.

I made it to my destination and safe and sound. I wanted a day to think about whether to report what happened, because I assume this young man needs the work. However, he’s risking his life and the life of others with his driving. So I contacted Uber by phone. It was bad.

Since Uber was recording me, I asked if I could also record the call. The first representative, who was routing calls, said it was fine. However, Tristan, the person who was supposedly there to help assure passenger safety, literally hung up on me.

First of all, lol. Second, this is why drivers need a union and a living wage, to have ONLY professional drivers on the road, not drummers who "Uber" on the side.
