When we meditate, the breath moves in & out in its own rhythm. Breathing mindfully is calming & compassionate; each breath sustains our existence, ebbing & flowing, rocking us into a more peaceful present. Each breath is a physical manifestation of the movement of life itself.

It can take time and practice to learn how to truly listen to yourself and what you need. I invite you to ask yourself this today. The answer may be rest, nourishment, a warm hug, a belly laugh.❤️🌸❤️

During my 10 day retreat at Ram Dass’s Maui home, I will share my heart and mind with you out of gratitude for what I’ve been so lucky to learn from my Buddhist teachers and my beloved friend Ram Dass.

In the wake of my brother’s sudden death & other losses, I’m exploring how to respect & heal my personal grief, anger & pain whilst holding a vast View. How do the teachings actually work when our hearts are broken? It’s hard to give myself over to the vulnerability of grieving.

Whether we are responding to the events of the world or personal grief or both, keeping the heart open is a gateway to true compassion. My beloved Trudy Goodman, also a dharma teacher, is practicing with this just now on her personal retreat in Hawaii at Ram Dass's house.

When I plunge beneath the ocean’s surface, it becomes silent. All I hear is my breath. Did you know you can cry while snorkeling? No one can hear the sobs that come in waves. When I swim away from the reef, I feel my brother looking through my eyes & the weeping turns into joy.

When I look into the eyes of the young men serving @hanumanmaui, I see my brother staring back in his devilishly handsome way. I can’t believe that I’ll never reminisce with you again. Unless of course we are reminiscing right now? Do you hear me, Jon? Can you hear me right now?

Some of you have told me you are grieving your own losses, often sudden and always traumatic. What helps? (A thread)...

1) Allow that rushing river of feelings to flow through you - anger, sorrow, guilt, regret - however grief is manifesting, just feel it fully, moment to moment, with as much self-compassion and loving awareness as you can muster.

2) Take refuge in your community or whoever it is you love. Reach out, let them know you are receiving hugs! People often feel shy, they don’t know what to do or say, so reaching out helps you and them. Grief is isolating. You need support.

3) Meditate! When you feel helpless and hopeless, lean on your spiritual practice. When you feel sunny and fine, strengthen your practice for when the weather changes.

4) Go outside and find some trees, sky, peace and quiet in nature where you are always held in the arms of Mother Earth and the vast, silent cosmos.
