chuffed that my new article in Urban History is out now! I use a 'local crank' to examine how citizenship was understood & exercised by ordinary people in the 1920s, and how far 'active' citizenship could be used to challenge civic elites

It has been a very long time in the making, but I have pressed send on the final manuscript for Growing Up and Going Out.

It's a book about youth culture, leisure, and the remaking of the post-war city. Coming to a library shelf near you soon!

If you haven't ordered your copy of Radical Acts yet, I'm really pleased that you can increasingly do so in ways which support local queer bookshops. Why not order from The Bookish Type in Leeds, for example? thebookishtype.co.uk/products/radic…

Things that should be cut but probably won't in cost-saving measures for universities:
1. the REF
2. restructuring advice from management consultants
3. contract with Key Travel
4. clunky 'virtual learning environment' when you could just email a PDF

As with everything, I think the critical question is: 'who stands to gain from this change?'

And I suspect we all know the answer...

Am increasingly not convinced by “open access” as a solution to anything. Academic texts aren’t aimed at wider audiences, who don’t know how to find them anyway; open access fees give even more money to academic publishers; access to open access fees is another marker of elitism.

Thank you Historic England. This is an amazing step in protecting a humble Birmingham backstreet thats seen, & hugely influenced, all of 20th century popular culture.

See also: the well-known popular historian giving the date of the original Cave of Harmony’s as 1917 - I guess because Elsa Lanchester was also a member of the 1917 Club.

It's no longer world book day but it's still a good time to think about the history of men and masculinities in modern Britain.
