We need to give this man his roses... He's not a pop artist, he doesn't have hits or club bangers. Yet, his ability to hold a totally Kenyan audience and teach them about Uganda for two solid hours is non imaginable. This one here is a Rockstar.

When the hut tax was introduced in 1900, for a brief moment, you could pay in live wild animals: a wild pig would cover one hut, a zebra thirty, and an elephant could cover for a thousand huts.

Still not sure if I'd rather wrangle a wild boar or deal with the tax authorities.

Kijiwe remains one of my favorite words that I think doesn't exist in Kenyan Swahili.

Likely derived from jiwe (rock), it means a place a few guys hang out, drinking coffee, chatting.

Today, it also means a stage.

Still, everytime I see it (empty energy drink bottles hanging off of trees at vijiwe / stages in Dar), I am driven mad with curiosity

Just read a book on taxation in Africa, and how VAT was introduced to replace the removal / massive reduction of import & export taxes in '80s (all IMF suggestions, of course)

Over 15k Burkinabe have fled to Ghana in the past 2 years. While Ghanaian government provides aid to thousands, Fulbe (Fulani/Peul) asylum seekers were targeted for expulsion and have been excluded from refugee registration. My latest for The New Humanitarian

For the past two years, every three months, Geofrey Ndhogezi and Kalungi James crisscross Kampala talking to boda riders for the Lubyanza quarterly report.

They've dealt with suspicious boda riders, terrible rains, boda breakdowns, and shifty policemen.

Bottom line: rich countries pretend to be in favour of fair & open markets, devlopment for all etc. but in practice the way financial markets are organized & regulated leads to an enormous income transfer from global South to global North, year after year & growing over time

This semester I've been teaching 'Economic Inequality and Growth' at UC Berkeley. This is a thread with some of my favorite graphs.

First, the headline everyone's-seen-it graph: falling then rising income inequality in Anglophone countries.

mycelium - notes on imperialism

in online leftist spaces the overlap between solidarity for victims of western imperialism and solidarity for victims of non-western imperialism appears diminishingly small. the same is true of activist spaces i'm involved with in real life. 1/
