.The Salon outing to Graffiti Market with my grad students and postdoc. First time seeing all my grad students at the same time! Cc Sara Kodeiri Mahbod Majid Argyris Mouzakis @vkerdos
Took my group to an escape room to celebrate the end of the term. We picked the hardest one and escaped from the diner 1 minute left! CC Mahbod Majid Argyris Mouzakis Shubhankar Mohapatra Sara Kodeiri
Congrats to Mahbod Majid on defending his Master's thesis on efficient private estimation. Papers include arxiv.org/abs/2111.12981 and another one appearing online Sunday. The Salon group pic to commemorate, featuring me, him, Alex Bie, Sabrina Mokhtari, Sara Kodeiri, Argyris Mouzakis
🧵 New paper with Sam Hopkins, Mahbod Majid, and Shyam Narayanan: "Robustness Implies Privacy in Statistical Estimation." A robust estimator can be (black-box) converted to a private estimator, often optimally. arxiv.org/abs/2212.05015 1/n
🧵New paper led by Jimmy Di & Jack Douglas, co-advised with Jayadev Acharya Ayush Sekhari (on Job Market): "Hidden Poison: Machine Unlearning Enables Camouflaged Poisoning Attacks" The adaptive nature of machine unlearning opens a new attack vector for adversaries. arxiv.org/abs/2212.10717 1/n
Just received the Faculty of Math Graduate Research Excellence Award from Waterloo Mathematics and I couldn't be more grateful! Huge thanks to my amazing advisor Gautam for the guidance and support.
Congrats to Jimmy Di on winning the Vector Institute Scholarship in AI! He was my Waterloo's Cheriton School of Computer Science URA, and will be staying for his Master's. He's done great work so far on new poisoning threats caused by machine unlearning (x.com/thegautamkamat…), I can't wait to work with him more!
Thanks Gautam Kamath both for posting this and for advising and supporting me! It's a privilege to be part of The Salon ! Also, thanks to all of my co-authors and mentors for their support (Matt Regehr, @vkerdos, Thomas Steinke and Jonathan Ullman)!
🧵Highlighting a SODA 2024 accepted paper, "Sorting and Selection in Rounds with Adversarial Comparisons," authored *solely* by Waterloo Mathematics undergraduate Chris Trevisan. This is the only single-authored paper by an undergrad in this SODA, a huge achievement!! Read on 👇1/n
Congrats to my URA, Waterloo's Cheriton School of Computer Science undergrad Matthew Yang, Finalist for the CRA (@CRAtweets) Outstanding Undergraduate Research Award! This recognizes him as one of the top 24 undergraduate CS researchers in North America. Don't miss his ML grad school application this cycle! 1/2
Excited to announce that I'm joining NYU Courant (NYU Courant) CS as an Assistant Professor in Fall 2025 (~1 year from now). If you wish to work with me as a PhD student in theory/empirics of robustness/privacy in stats/ML (or related topics), apply to Courant CS by Dec 12! 1/n
Very proud to share that Waterloo's Cheriton School of Computer Science undergrad Chris Trevisan (advised by Sepehr Assadi & me) is one of 8 WINNERS of the @CRAtweets Outstanding Undergraduate Researcher Award He is one of the top undergrad researchers in all of North America. More details in next tweets 1/n
🧵New paper on arXiv: Optimal Differentially Private Sampling of Unbounded Gaussians. With Waterloo's Cheriton School of Computer Science undergrad Valentio Iverson (Valentio Iverson) and PhD student Argyris Mouzakis (Argyris Mouzakis). The first O(d) algorithm for privately sampling arbitrary Gaussians! 1/n
Congrats to my undergrad Valentio Iverson (Valentio Iverson) on winning the Germain-Erdős Undergraduate Award in Mathematical Research, for “remarkable contributions to basic mathematical research." His work includes a COLT 2025 paper on private sampling with me and Argyris Mouzakis 1/3
Congratulations to my PhD student Matthew Regehr (Matt Regehr) on winning the University of Waterloo UWaterloo Cybersecurity and Privacy Institute Graduate Excellence Scholarship! This $10,000 prize recognizes his incredible achievements and potential in privacy research. The Salon Waterloo's Cheriton School of Computer Science
