The 22nd August is the latest we’ve ever seen Puffins at Sumburgh Head! They’re darting over the turbulent, turquoise waters beneath our Observatory. We’re also seeing plenty of Gannets diving for food, and Fulmars soaring effortlessly, riding the updraughts. 📷 Vicky Armstrong

This will be the last Puffin photo we take this year. We’re still seeing a handful of Puffins on the water, but they’re now too distant to photograph. We’ve loved sharing our summer with them, and we’ll continue to share highlights from the Puffin season here.

It’s turned into a glorious afternoon for having a wander around Sumburgh Head. Our Visitor Centre displays are open until 5pm, with refreshments available in the Observatory until 4:30pm.

Sumburgh Head Lighthouse and West Pavilion. The East and West Pavilions are part of the original lighthouse complex, designed by Robert Stevenson, to house two Lightkeepers and their families.

The Puffins have all left for the winter, where they’ll spend the next 8 months living out at sea. We won’t see them again until next April, but we’ll continue to enjoy looking back through our photos from this summer. 📷 Vicky Armstrong

Today we said a fond farewell to two of our team, as they head off to begin university courses and placements. Both Kiera and Cerys have been an absolute joy to work with, and we wish both of them the very best for all their future endeavours ❤️

Today is #NationalWildlifeDay! Our image today shows the puffins at Sule Skerry Lighthouse. Sadly the puffin is on the UK red list for conservation status, meaning that they are at real risk of dying out. We enjoy seeing all the lovely pictures of them at SumburghHead!
