Wes Streeting, 'I don't think we have a sick note culture and a lazy workforce. I think we have a sickness problem and a lazy government'

'Only this Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, sat in No 10, looking at NHS waiting lists, just south of 8 million, looking at mental health

“The language that we use… even in the question ‘Do we have a sick note culture?’ It’s cruel”

Chair of the NHS Confederation Victor Adebowale says the use of “performative” language needs to stop, and the government should show more 'compassion'

No.

Here’s a room full of disabled people doing the most.

This ‘sick note culture’ conversation is a tactic for the Tories to win more votes. It’s a harmful rhetoric at the expense of disabled people.

Also hope there are disabled people on the Question Time panel.

On my way to the Scope awards, excited especially as chair of the judges, but also sad as the last time I attended, I sat next to Paul Fuller and his dog Bolt. It was the last time I saw him. I'm sure he’d be proud of everyone today.

The UN report has recognised that we are barely surviving under this government, not living full lives. We are subject to complex and punitive benefit systems that see us as ‘undeserving’. We are kept in poverty.

Improving digital accessibility would be so incredibly more meaningful for disabled people than blindfolding the Mayor and Mayoress and sending them on a train journey maidstonebc. Here’s how to do it business.scope.org.uk/article/access….

It's insulting. The government needs to tackle the root cause of poor mental health. Not demonise people for failures of the systems meant to support them. ITV News

You don't have to experience someone else's challenges to help or care; empathy, understanding, and a willingness to listen are often the most powerful tools for creating meaningful change.

Or just believe people when they share their experiences? Simulating experiences like disability is a very, very outdated practice, and let’s be honest, lazy. The focus is on people being blindfolded rather than the barriers faced by people they’re supposed to be helping. Sigh.

'the vast majority of people on benefits struggle to afford their essential costs. So the idea that people are choosing an easy life on benefits is a complete caricature'

The news today might feel scary if you're currently off work for your mental health. We get it 💙

We just want to reassure you that these changes are *not* coming into effect right now. 1/2

Actually we have the opposite problem. People coming back to work sooner than they should

⬇️No one can survive on £100 p/w sick pay
🚨75% disabled people work through illness

If gov is serious about economic inactivity then focus on building trust and voluntary support.
