You don't have a criminal justice system if you don't have a robust public defender service with pay parity with prosecutors - and that needs to be said not just by defense lawyers but also prosecutors. Saying so does not make prosecutors pro-criminal but pro-constitution.

Even putting the politics aside, imagine you’re at the dentist, a lawyer’s office, or dealing with a plumber.

Would you have any confidence in the person’s ability following this, absent some explanation?

I really feel we have lost touch with how close we came in 2020 to authoritarianism enforced by nationwide, city-by-city state violence. The forces behind that effort remain widely influential in US politics and their return to power in 15 months is entirely plausible.
