SciComm Club by @TheSharedScope -When freelancing, how do you persuade clients to pay you your rate for your work? -How do you broach the subject? -How do you ensure they pay on time? (I always ask for "due upon receipt" terms & payment for travel time - stops cancelled or 5 min mtgs 1 hr away) #SciCommChat

@joseilicgarcia @thegsyscientist SciComm Club by @TheSharedScope Ah yes, the first taste is free approach. It lets people see your value, if they do see it. Sometimes well-written, clear content seems so obvious that clients don't understand the work that went into it. Simple to understand ≠ easy to write. Others do value it though.

SciComm Club by @TheSharedScope Try to compensate w short billing periods eg, weekly invoicing & making terms (not 30,45-60 or worse 90 days) "due upon receipt" of bill Most orgs don't start processing invoices until due date, IME. I also call, "Going to be nearby Fri, so I'll pop in to pick up the cheque."

@joseilicgarcia SciComm Club by @TheSharedScope @thegsyscientist Also, how do you get across the idea of the cost of your investment in equipment to potential paid/unpaid clients? Carpenters' fees reflect not only their skill but the tools they bring to a job. For us they can be invisible to a client. #scicommchat

It sounds like the issues of getting paid at all, at a rate respectful of ones expertise, and on time is a big one, common to many of us but problems for which there are few clear-cut solutions. Good #SciCommChat Nidhi | Science Communications + Strategy !
