Hey team, I’m a little under the weather today (yes, again 😭) so I’m going to regrettably cancel our session today.

Sorry for the inconvenience, and see you next week x

José Ilić García (el/he) SciComm Club by @TheSharedScope Liz Also, how do you get across the idea of the cost of your investment in equipment to potential paid/unpaid clients?
Carpenters' fees reflect not only their skill
but the tools they bring to a job.
For us they can be invisible to a client.

It sounds like the issues of getting paid at all, at a rate respectful of ones expertise, and on time
is a big one, common to many of us
but problems for which there are few clear-cut solutions.

SciComm Club by @TheSharedScope Try to compensate w short billing periods
eg, weekly invoicing
& making terms (not 30,45-60 or worse 90 days)
'due upon receipt' of bill
Most orgs don't start processing invoices until due date, IME.
I also call, 'Going to be nearby Fri, so I'll pop in to pick up the cheque.'

José Ilić García (el/he) Liz SciComm Club by @TheSharedScope Ah yes, the first taste is free approach.
It lets people see your value,
if they do see it.
Sometimes well-written, clear content
seems so obvious that clients don't understand the work that went into it.
Simple to understand ≠ easy to write.
Others do value it though.

Liz SciComm Club by @TheSharedScope As long as the communication is kind and clear, I've always had good experiences (being on both ends of the discussion).

Being clear about rate, being open to some wiggle room, and it's okay to say 'no'!

Liz SciComm Club by @TheSharedScope What has worked for me in the past is to answer to the request for activities with a Frase like 'sure I would love to participate, give me all the details so I can make you a proper offer for my services'
That way is like I was already assuming they were going to pay

SciComm Club by @TheSharedScope -When freelancing, how do you persuade clients to pay you your rate for your work?
-How do you broach the subject?
-How do you ensure they pay on time?
(I always ask for 'due upon receipt' terms & payment for travel time - stops cancelled or 5 min mtgs 1 hr away)
