I actually did not know about this feature on what is literally my fave website of all time.

e.g. Loch Ness using 19th century OS six inch maps.

An incredible resource!

I would contend that Braeriach is the best hill in Scotland. Controversial, maybe. What is indisputable is that for complexity, visual grandeur, and sheer bulk, few if any hills can match it for one of these individual traits, and none for all of them.

There’s still spaces on the 15th May Glasgow Geol Soc trip to the National Museums Scotland collections centre, to tour the palaeobiology & earth systems collections! Afterwards you can head to Granton beach, where me & Dr Neil Clark will be talking about the awesome geology

Cover image time! I'm so delighted that the The Stirling Smith gave permission to use this Green of Leith painting. The Smith was my local museum growing up so it's particularly special to have a picture from their collections on the cover of my first book. edinburghuniversitypress.com/book-kirkyard-…

Congratulations to Perth Museum on the opening of their new museum 🥳

🦄 We are delighted to have loaned a number of objects including this carved panel, now on display in their exhibition 'Unicorn'.

Hilly views compensating (sort of) for the swell aboard the ferry to Lewis this evening, after an inspiring afternoon with the wonderful Ullapool Museum. Two days of exciting research on the Westside ahead! 🌊

Happy everybody. One of our all-time favourite photos from our Photographic Archive is this undated photo of a very young suffrage campaigner on the streets of Stromness , taken by Robert H. Robertson early last century.

In 1881, Mr Richmond was looking for rabbits, lost his ferret but found the first half of a Bronze Age hoard, the rest of which took another 81 years to find. More on the curious discovery of the Torran hoard here:

Congrats Historic Environment Scotland on this report; it is a v. significant one. I am proud to have co-authored this. It moves things to a new understanding of 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿’s past, its treasured spaces, and its familiar spots. It shows how all our history- Neolithic to industrial- are saturated in Empire

Wreckage of an ancient ship found on an Orkney beach may have been buried under the sand for centuries until, like Skara Brae, it’s been uncovered by winter storms. Thanks to Sanday resident Jonathan Hines for this video.
