Ontario midwives have battled the Ontario government since 2013, alleging discrimination in compensation on the basis of gender.  In 2020, the Ontario Human Rights Tribunal ordered back pay to 2011, in addition to several other remedies.

In June 2023, the Pay Equity Tribunal determined that Bluewater Health didn't negotiate fairly. They cancelled the agreed terms and put their own plan for achieving pay equity in place without consulting SEIU Healthcare or staff at their hospitals.
