Tree planting, food production, new homes, renewables etc etc - is there no recognition of the contribution?
Pleased to feature on Farming Today discussing the Wildlife Management & Muirburn Bill following its passage through Scottish Parliament.
The Bill has been significantly improved by amendments but still goes further than is required to tackle raptor persecution.

Our Director of Moorland, Ross Ewing, appeared on BBC Radio Scotland’s Drivetime programme this afternoon to respond to the Wildlife Management & Muirburn Bill being passed by Scottish Parliament.

My piece on licensing grouse shooting in Scotland with a nod to Scottish Land & Estates countryside-alliance.org/resources/news…
Grateful to the MSPs which brought forward sensible amendments to the Wildlife Management & Muirburn Bill today, including Jim Fairlie MSP SNP, Emma Harper MSP, Alasdair Allan, Rachael Hamilton MSP Scottish Borders, Edward Mountain & Rhoda Grant. Thank you all for your efforts to make the Bill more workable.
During stage 3 of the Wildlife Management & Muirburn Bill, Emma Harper MSP has introduced an amendment which puts beyond doubt the ability to make muirburn out of season under licence if it is necessary. This will provide land managers with greater flexibility to make muirburn.
During stage 3 of the Wildlife Management & Muirburn Bill in Scottish Parliament, Jim Fairlie MSP SNP has created a new licensable purpose which will enable muirburn to be made to reduce wildfire risk on non-peatland habitats. This will provide greater flexibility to land managers.
At the stage 3 debate on the Wildlife Management & Muirburn Bill, Jim Fairlie MSP SNP has successfully introduced amendments which ensure a Sheriff hearing an appeal can make interim orders in respect of grouse shoot licences. This strengthens the statutory right to appeal.
At stage 3 of the Wildlife Management & Muirburn, Rachael Hamilton MSP Scottish Borders has successfully introduced amendments which will ensure that NatureScot provide reasons for refusing, modifying, suspending or revoking a licence to shoot grouse.
At stage 3 of the Wildlife Management & Muirburn Bill, Jim Fairlie MSP SNP has successfully introduced an amendment which ensures prospective appellants have a full 21 days to decide whether to appeal a licensing decision. This improves the statutory right to appeal.
Today we’re in Scottish Parliament for stage 3 of the Wildlife Management & Muirburn Bill. We’re pleased that MSPs have agreed an amendment by Rachael Hamilton MSP Scottish Borders which will ensure NatureScot have to provide reasons for refusing, modifying, suspending or revoking licences for wildlife traps.
After over a year of scrutiny, 4 Ministers, and 310 proposed amendments, the Wildlife Management and Muirburn Bill will reach it's conclusion tomorrow.
Ross Ewing has been leading SLE's work with MSPs from across parties to help shape a Bill that is workable and proportionate.
