Why are these scenarios so commonplace here in Ireland? When will these people realise that all of this ends badly? Why is it allowed? Nature in Ireland is under constant attack in the name of ‘progress’. We need to protect it. Restore it. Cherish it.

I am extremely happy to share my first paper (‼️), a joint effort between my PhD project at ATU MFRC and mesopelagic research at the Marine Institute If you want to know more about how #eDNA 🧬 can help us study mesopelagic fish 🐟, give it a read! doi.org/10.1093/icesjm…

Just screen grabbed from Facebook. I'm not religious but the idea resonates with me. I'm an ecologist because I love nature, not to facilitate resource extraction, monetise biodiversity, valuate ecosystems services. That's more of the same, waters down restoration & conservation.

Like rivers overhead, the branches of this tree bring life where they wander. Growing for centuries in our Ancient Wood reserve in Ballinakelly, the entire area was probably named after this wood. In the Irish language Ballinakelly is "Baile na coille", the townland of the woods

15°C in southern England tomorrow—just 4 weeks before Christmas. Most of England will be ~8°C above the seasonal norm. 🌍 The wild climate swings we’re seeing will only intensify as the planet continues to warm.

A wintery morning today in SW part of Białowieża Forest. -10°C throughout the night froze all the waterbodies including rivers, yet still Pygmy Owls & Hazel Grouses were vocally active in the sunshine. Still the most interesting was two Red Deer stags rutting! Exceptionally late!

I started Ireland's most ambitious camera trap project in Wicklow as part of Snapshot Europe. Since 2021, I partnered with Lab of Wildlife Ecology & Behaviour + ReWild Wicklow deploying 150 cameras, collecting ~400,000 photos, and ~31 years worth of survey effort. 2024's highlights below! 🧵👇
