Chevalier took the Polemoscope of Hevelius and added a camera. In 1859 some military engineers made military use of it like a giant Periscope.

A retired military surgeon, Chevalier places a camera on a land-surveyor's stand, fixing it upon an axis allowing the camera to be turned to different points of the horizon.

Pictures are obtained creating a full Panorama.

POLEMOSCOPE
JOHANNES HEVELIUS (1611–1687)
Hevelius defined a Periscope that he called a Polemoscope, describing it in his work ‘Selenographia, Sive Lunae Descriptio.'

It had a mirror but no camera.

Hevelius proposed military applications for his creation.

Born in 1835, this is American author Mark Twain, best known for penning The Adventures of Tom Sawyer in 1876 & its sequel Huckleberry Finn in 1884. I've cleaned-up these two rare autochrome photos, taken in colour 116 years ago. They are not colourised.

Quinet was a member of the ‘Sociéte Française de Photographie’ from 1876 to 1894. His work was displayed in the 1878 Universal Exhibition.

Quinet's work shouldn't be confused with Constant-Alexandre Famin which often happens I'm told.

Most of Quinet’s work is housed at the Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris, where he deposited his Etudes at the Depôt Légal in 1868, 1875, 1877.

Below, Nº 23 in his series Etude d'Après Nature. This photograph was a sensation when made public, for the glassy-looking water alone.

Housed at the Pavillon de l'Empereur' (Garnier Palace or Opéra Garnier) in Paris.

Referring to Quinet, this excerpt is taken from ‘The History of Photography - From the Camera Obscura to The Beginning of The Modern Era’ (Helmut and Alison Gernsheim, Thames and Hudson, London, 1969), and is found on p260.

Achille Quinet was a successful photographer in Paris from 1869 to 1879.

Although he made photographs of the architecture of Paris as well as a series of views of Italy, he is best known for his landscape, animals, and figure studies.

QUINETOSCOPE
ACHILLE LÉON QUINET (1831–1900)
Quinet age 22, presents the first binocular-style stereo camera and calls it a Quinetoscope. A photographer in Paris, Quinet is best remembered for his compositions of livestock and landscapes using the Quinetoscope.

Officially re-opened to the public in 1991, it houses one of only two of the largest operational Camera Obscuras in the South East of England. -30-

The Foredown Tower Camera Obscura was originally built in 1909 as a sanatorium for patients with infectious diseases.

It was demolished in 1989 and rebuilt two years later into this truly optical learning environment.

This beautifully converted Edwardian water tower was rebuilt with optics installed in a cupola at the top of the tower, becoming the Foredown Tower and Camera Obscura.

The camera was constructed of mahogany or cherry, a black fabric bellows and brass hardware. Available in 4 x 5 size only.

Shutter speed was 1/ 700th a second. Priced in 1883 at $27 for the outfit and $5 for the gun-stock.

Kilburn's Gun Camera was designed for the outdoor photographer who had to deal with heavy equipment and difficult terrain.

By combining a lightweight 4x5 camera with a specially fitted gunstock and trigger-release linkage, Kilburn was able to do away with the tripod.
