It was such a pleasure to host Simon Schama at the Mile End Institute for the inaugural Hennessy Lecture, on 'Antisemitism in Historical Perspective'.
The full lecture - ranging from Ancient Egypt to modern Britain - is available on our YouTube Channel, here: youtube.com/watch?v=PZicf8…
Nice piece by Philip Cowley & Matthew Bailey on whether the PM would, as claimed, have been breaking with tradition if he'd announced the election while indoors.
(Spoiler: Not really. First done in 1992, and not consistently since.)

.Philip Cowley & Matthew Bailey take a sledgehammer to the myth that announcing a general election outside No 10 is British tradition
Really interesting piece!

Great to see my review of Colm Murphy's outstanding 'Futures of Socialism' - on Labour's contested 'modernisations' in the 1980s and 1990s - now published at Journal of British Studies.

Good to see Philip Cowley and Matthew Bailey knocking on the head the bizarre idea that announcing elections from outside Number 10 - 'come rain or shine' - is one of 'the traditions of our country'.
It had never happened before 1992 and hasn't always happened since.
Wicked lunchtime read by our School of Politics & IR at Queen Mary colleague Philip Cowley and Matthew Bailey politicshome.com/thehouse/artic…
This is a great corrective from Philip Cowley to some of the mythologizing about the degree of enthusiasm there was for Tony Blair back in 1997 x.com/adampayne26/st…
Me and Matthew Bailey, on 'enthusiasm' as a requirement for victory:

So proud of the work that Global Politics Unbound & our fantastic research fellow Nika Mahnič are doing. Listen to our latest episode about the great work of our School of Politics & IR at Queen Mary PhD candidate Meena Masood, who is working on how 'vulnerability' is gendered and deployed in the humanitarian sector
“If it doesn't pay off, well, where does that leave them?”
Colm Murphy speaks to Business Post about why Labour's pitch for growth through stability is a gamble.

There's little enthusiasm for Labour. Does it matter?
