It is worth watching this CNN video from the moment Emory Econ Professor Caroline Fohlin came across the violent arrest of a protester on campus and asked the police, with shock, 'What are you doing?' That's all that prompted an officer to hurl her to the ground and handcuff her.

We must be clear that administrators are inviting police, who are legally authorized to use deadly force, on campuses to respond to what are peaceful protests. It is an unnecessary and dangerous escalation.

University policies are not laws. Violations of said policies is NOT a justification for mobilizing police and wielding state power to force campus stakeholders into compliance.

Doing so is a blatant and dangerous demonstration of fascist authoritarianism.

Meeting peaceful protests of state violence with more state violence is...not going to convince the protesters they are wrong.

But it will definitely teach them the connection between violence abroad and at home.

The lesson that everyone in higher education should be understanding is that if this can happen at a private prestigious university in a “Blue” state, it can happen anywhere.

Has anyone written about or studied how marginalized people’s expressions of anger are constantly referred to or interpreted as hate?

When you punish students for their love & compassion you teach them how powerful compassion truly is. You admit to them that you govern on a premise that cannot withstand love. Love prevails. We’re witnessing the soul growth of a generation. They deserve our care & respect.💜

Showing up is the least faculty can do. We have a voice and we need to use it effectively. We need to strengthen the structures we have—faculty senates, unions, @aaup—and create strong alliances, with students, staff, alumni, civic organizations. Together we are stronger. ✊🏽✊🏾✊
