9/The very fact that ostensibly liberal campus leaders hastily deployed the police sends a dangerous signal to bad actors who are eager to silence those with whom they disagree. Evoke 'safety'--usually without evidence of serious danger--and you have a license for repression.

But the real danger on college campuses is DEI and students being exposed to dialogue about race and racism.

This is exactly what’s making any normal observer feel insane.
A pro-Israel mob attacked these kids with slurs, fists, mace, and fireworks. Police watched for HOURS & did nothing.
A day later, police instead bombard *them* with rubber bullets & flashbangs.
(All in a “blue” state)

Jeff Sharlet Dartmouth 🌲 Those cops were brutal to me. I promise I did absolutely nothing wrong. I was standing with a line of women faculty in the their 60s to 80s trying to protect our students. I have now been banned from the campus where I have taught for 34 years.

America was built on civil disobedience.

It is possible to hold the line against violence and intimidation while insisting on protesters' rights -- and being curious enough to absorb what they're telling us that we may be too jaded to hear.

In addition to arresting their own students for a protest, UGA is also suspending them. What an absolute mockery of their 'support for freedom of expression'. What a total disgrace.

Y’all. This is the notice of suspension that one of the UGA students received. I have redacted their name. But take a note of the timestamp. Email sent at 5:09 PM, they have to contact her office by 5:10 PM, or else they are suspended at 5:11 PM. You can’t make this up. 🤦🏼‍♀️

So first of all stop comparing anti-genocide organizers to white supremacists because that’s just wildly fucking offensive

But also second of all reckon with the fact that universities make space for white supremacists all the time, both in and out of classrooms

We are experiencing the brutal crackdown on campus “unrest” with not only the support from the Right, but also the full-throated approval of many on the Center, including many self-identifying “free speech” defenders. Weird, huh?

Maybe if university administrators stopped cutting the humanities and social sciences and read a fucking book, they would understand the dialectic between repression and resistance better and know that they’re sowing the seeds of their own demise with these shows of brute force.
