“Calling in law enforcement did not work at Berkeley in 1964, at Columbia in 1968, at Harvard in 1969, or at Kent State in 1970.”

It won’t work now.

Emory University officials initially said a pro-Palestinian demonstration was organized by “outside protesters.”
“It is clear to us now that this information was not fully accurate, and I apologize for that mischaracterization,” says the school prez.

My office was right by the encampment, and I cannot understand how it interferes with exams. It’s that little red circle.

Not a single notable the protest in the history of modern protest would meet the requirements of “acceptable” protest from many past free speech advocates.

Notable—unlike other schools, Wesleyan Uni says it will not clear an encampment so long as it remains non-violent:
'This morning you can find pro-Palestinian protestors camped out…as long as we all reject violence, we have opportunities to listen and to learn from one another.'

“notably: 1) preserves safety of everyone on campus, 2) achieved through discussion, and 3) recognizes protest as part of the intended use of campus space/campus speech. Nobody had to use police violence to achieve this result.” 🏆

WOW. Powerful letter from the President of the IU faculty. I have rarely seen such a bold and unequivocal statement of principles. I was not aware of the unique free speech policies on the IU campus. Abhorrent that police violence was used the way it was. Worth a read in full.

Faculty anywhere barred from campus for participating in a peaceful protest should contact the American Association of University Professors at @[email protected] and provide details.

As the voice of higher ed and the profession since our founding in 1915, American Association of University Professors is here to help.

My faculty harasser, who was found guilty of violating department and university policies by IU Title IX, was not banned from IU Bloomington campus. He was only banned from department space/events. Not banned from campus as a whole.

And yet this student was banned for 5 years.

THIS. IS. NOT. FREE. SPEECH. Threats of expulsion or firing for “disruption” limits our freedom of expression.

Some of you do not get that this is a major crisis of the university. We are seriously looking at a massive authoritarian turn in what are already authoritarian practices of higher ed governance. It’s not a joke.
