In our new paper at Cell (Cell), we reveal secrets of how the third form of life, archaea, make energy. We uncover new lineages of hydrogen-using enzymes, both minimal and complex. These help archaea thrive in all sorts of extreme environments. sciencedirect.com/science/articl…

This manuscript shows how we can deepen our understanding even of uncultivated microbes. We combine in-depth metagenomics with extensive biochemical studies and even some work on Asgard enrichments. This showed hydrogenases are not just present, but also active, in archaea.

This was possible through great collaborations, including with Princess R. Cabotaje, Bob Leung, Luis E. Valentín-Alvarado, Schleper Lab Vienna, Henrik Land, Rhys Grinter, Courtney Stairs, Anja Spang (she/her), Berggren@UU, and The Banfield Lab.
