CHM Michael McCaul: 'Department of State must designate Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty journalist Alsu Kurmasheva as wrongfully detained. While State drags its feet on designating her, she languishes in a Russian prison because of false charges levied by a Kremlin-controlled court. There’s no time to waste.”

Now that @potus has called for Alsu’s release, it’s time for Department of State and Secretary Antony Blinken to officially declare her a “wrongfully detained person”. There
Is no reason for this delay and Alsu needs all of the resources of the USG brought to bear.

U.S. citizen Alsu Kurmasheva has been wrongfully detained for half a year in Russia because she holds a U.S. passport. It's time the U.S. government said the same. Alsu's family needs her and the world needs journalists who show us the truth.

Half a year.

That's how long Russia has detained Alsu Kurmasheva, an Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty journalist and U.S. citizen.

That's how long Alsu has slept in a cramped cell, next to a toilet.

That's how long she hasn't spoken to her children.

Six months since being detained in Russia, U.S. journalist Alsu Kurmasheva has insisted she will walk free 'as an innocent person.' She is charged with failing to register as a foreign agent. The charges are widely seen as reprisals for her journalistic work.
