A GROUNDBREAKING POLLUTION CASE
The case involves a small stream (beck) like many of tens of thousands of others in the U.K.
It was destined to remain anonymous and decimated by pollution, it was dying until Fish Legal got involved.
From our recent Live discussion,…

Today the River Chess has reached a grim milestone. Thames Water 💧 have been discharging sewage into the Chess for over 1,000 continuous hours now. The Chess is a chalk stream - a globally rare and precious ecosystem. 1/2

A giant leap: the administration hopes reducing concentrations of some PFAS to 10ng/l, PFOS & PFOA to 4ng/l will 'prevent thousands of deaths, and reduce tens of thousands of serious illnesses'.

In the UK, permitted levels for PFAS in drinking water are 10 X higher than this.

Another dubious milestone on the R. Chess Association today as we pass 1000 hours of continuous sewage dumping from the Thames Water 💧 operated Chesham STW. This is un-permitted and action is needed by Environment Agency, we would expect sanctions. Chesham Town Council Chilterns National Landscape Chiltern Society

Interesting read about how storm overflows are going to reduce. In the Colne catchment we are not suffering from storm overflows, the reason for the continuous sewage discharges is groundwater ingress an un-permitted reason to discharge. water.org.uk/overflows-plan ChilternChalkStreams

Farmers warn ‘crisis is building’ as record rainfall drastically reduces UK food production. The local ephemeral winterbourne chalk stream called the Bourne Gutter is known as a woe water, a predictor high bread prices. It’s been flowing for months. theguardian.com/environment/20…

Great to be up in East Yorkshire for the weekend. The highlight was Sunday lunch, ordering sticky toffee pudding was asked “do you want ought on it?” I went for custard. You had me at “ought”.

One of the offending manholes that has been spewing sewage onto the streets of Kilham E Yorkshire since November 2023 has eventually stopped. Now time for ⁦Yorkshire Water 💧⁩ to come up with a plan to ensure this does not happen again and not brush it under the carpet.

Time for the Environment Agency to report on their monitoring of the HS2 Chiltern tunnels. We need to know what happened to the lost pollutants. Impacts on groundwater flows and the sewage network. geological subsurface movements & future safety of roads, buildings & farmland.

A disgrace & will not be resolved anytime soon. Need to see plans for a comprehensive solution to this problem, taking into account emerging issues, climate implications, population growth & changes in use. The solution to the big stink was radical need to repeat. Thames Water 💧

As we search for a solution to this devastating problem of pollution through sewage discharges we need to solve the problem of micro plastics, emerging chemicals and pharmaceuticals that sail through the existing network untouched and into the environment, a ticking time bomb.

The R. Chess Association passes another unwanted milestone, we have had over 900 hundred hours of continuous sewage dumping from the Thames Water 💧 operated Chesham Sewage Treatment Works. This stretches back to 29th February 2024.

I was made aware of an Environment Agency flood warning feature. With high groundwater and heavy rain might be worth registering. gov.uk/sign-up-for-fl…

A number of local groups pointed out during the consultation phase of HS2 years before a single spade hit the ground. At the last minute only days before Environmental approval has given the Environment Agency conceded this was a distinct possibility and yet they still approved it.

And while these rivers across Chilterns suffer HS2 Ltd continue to add to the problems. HS2 an obscene waste of money when scarce resources are desperately needed elsewhere. Clean water and sewage management must come before the HS2 Ltd vanity project.
