Very interesting point. Two possibilities: a) the influence of the singer-songwriter community which prizes original songs over covers, and b) the nature of some jazz compositions that don't have a strong melody and might not offer opportunities for different interpretations.

Oh no! I remember hearing Vic Vogel Big Band at the Ottawa Jazz Festival a few years, and the band's music was wonderful.

Very sad news. His album with Kirk MacDonald was great, among many others he made.
