1869 Conference & Heritage Festival This is somewhat surprising given that Victorian gentlemen are associated with overeating and with gout, but perhaps the vogue for exercise counteracted that. This was also of interest to me given that at the same conference I delivered a talk focusing on ME Braddon and Galton.

Tracey Jones's fascinating talk on Victorian mining women. Dr Tracey Jones Victorian mining women were accused both of having 'masculinized' themselves and of caring too much about 'frivolous' accessories and fashion. This painting called "Sackcloth and Ashes" by Thomas Henry Thomas shows "tip girls leaving work". In her talk for #AVSA2019 and #Otago1869 Tracey Jones advises that Victorian Welsh tipwomen were associated with dust and sin. This painting suggests tipwomen's need for repentance.
