“Just don’t think about it” is probably the worst advice anyone can give to someone with mental illness

I have thought a lot—A LOT—about what it means to be disabled by mental illness, a so-called “invisible disability.” The extent to which mental illness commandeers the brain and holds it hostage is difficult for abled people to grasp. When OCD takes over, little function is left.

Out Damned Thought So much yes. If something is important, then it will come up again. I’m most easily obsessive about novel stuff that usually is meaningless. But the lie that OCD tells me is that it’s urgent, irreversible, but preventable (by seeking certainty with compulsions).

So major. Biggest factor in my improved mental health: realizing that things (most things in my day) can be+are MEANINGLESS. Once you believe they are meaningless rather than rich with urgent, important meaning, you can ignore them rather than giving away all your time+emotion

Actually, the only time thoughts aren't filling my head is when I TRY to voluntarily think. That's when the static sets in. Otherwise, when I'm not trying to critically think or focus on something, it's just all racing thoughts.

A little bit more about me. My name is Josef and I live in New Jersey. I was diagnosed with OCD and anxiety disorders back in 2010, and have been trying to figure out how to manage the symptoms since then. My main goal is to try and break the stigma

This has actually been a really been a crash course in ERP. Hit by so many troubling thoughts that I’ve been able to up my game of just setting them aside to continue about my day. Granted, have to do that every 30 to 60 seconds, but what a lotta practice

Extremely glad to be leaving my apartment and my awful landlord. Our fallout has been triggering me to worry a lot about the prospect of interacting, catch a new negative fantasy every 30 to 60 seconds.
