We knew high temperature records would be tough to beat today (thanks 2020) and they were. So far the only record is at Indio with a high of 121, breaking the old record of 120 set in...you guessed it...2020.

Did you catch the sunrise today? Here's a time-lapse taken by one our mets, showing 2 cool features that occurred the atmosphere this morning - the 1st is a layer of altocumulus clouds and the other was a sun dog(!), visible as the bright spot to the left of the actual sun. #CAwx

NWS San Diego (@nwssandiego) 's Twitter Profile Photo

A sundog (also called a mock sun or parhelion) is an atmospheric optical phenomenon that appears as a bright spot (or smaller sun) to either one or both sides of the actual sun, sometimes accompanied by a halo around the sun.

NWS San Diego (@nwssandiego) 's Twitter Profile Photo

These are caused by sunlight refracting off of ice crystals in the atmosphere. This morning's sounding shows our freezing level at ~15k ft, while the layer of altocumulus were ~16-17k ft - which means they were likely partially made of ice crystals and not just water droplets.

NWS San Diego (@nwssandiego) 's Twitter Profile Photo

These are more common in colder climates where glaciated (frozen) clouds form more easily, and are a much more uncommon sight down here in SoCal - so we found this super cool. If anyone has other pictures of this phenomena from this morning, we'd love to see!

NWS San Diego (@nwssandiego) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Finally, do these clouds mean storms? Not today, conditions are too dry & stable through the rest of the atmosphere. They are a indicator of moisture aloft, which will incr & help lead to our thunderstorm chances Sat/Sun, when a lot of inland areas have >= 15% chance of Tstorms.

Here's the link to our record high temperatures today. It was quite hot, but there would have been even more records set if Sep. 6, 2020 weren't one of the hottest days in SoCal history! #CAwx forecast.weather.gov/product.php?si…
