Daniel Willingham Unfortunately, some of the people whose job it is to be a well researched and well respected expert turn out to be ideologues. It would be great if there was some general purpose heuristic we could teach to journalists to tell the difference.

What can education learn from Moneyball? @profcoe and I will tell you Saturday 12.15 at #rEd24 researchED Drop by, even if you think the answer to that question is "nothing"

The primary aim of this (free) webinar on direct instruction is to empower teachers. We know maximizing learning is a game of inches, we hate the dog and pony show, and we love our subjects. Let’s teach what we love more efficiently and explicitly! educationrickshaw.com/2024/08/28/rev…

Codding I think children become math anxious when they see themselves consistently, and predictably, not understanding math concepts and being unable to solve math problems. Math anxiety is caused by bad instruction. Anxiety experienced during timed tests is a symptom, not a cause.

First teaching day with just Year 7 in today. A total of 126 'observations' took place where staff were watching & learning from each other. We discussed 'openness to learning' in our INSET & our staff are truly living this value. Very proud to work at Ark Soane Academy

Imagine a moment in time in which the guy who writes Evidence Snacks joins a call with the author of TLAC, and suddenly the author of Responsive Coaching appears, and for some reason I’m there too to press record. That may very well be happening next week, my friends. Stay tuned!

“Young people do well if they can” is such an obviously false statement it should trigger laughter every time it’s uttered. Behavior involves individual choices.

Progressively Incorrect, my podcast about evidence informed approaches to teaching, features interviews with the best minds in education. It’s back on, this time with a bit of a book launch for Just Tell Them, available for pre-order now! educationrickshaw.com/2024/09/05/s4e…

Back at it tonight with my very favourite podcast by Anna Stokke. Loved this episode with my whole heart. Fact fluency and automaticity in mathematics is vital for future success.

As a dad who is super worried that his kindergartner won’t be challenged for the next three years, having Open House begin with, “Do you know your last name, hon” doesn’t inspire much confidence 😭

Well done! Reading the abstract, it appears intensive tutoring outperformed remedial courses - makes sense - but that remedial courses did alright and no difference between 2:1 and 3:1 tutoring. My hunch is larger groups perform the same if homogeneity and DI methods are applied.

Corey Peltier (@coreyjpeltier) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Zach Groshell We used college students as tutors - most with no prior experience. My hypothesis is group sizes being larger may become more difficult without prior experience - qualitative data supported this

Corey Peltier (@coreyjpeltier) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Zach Groshell My other hypothesis is more structured tutoring materials would allow for increased group size (and perhaps stronger effects)! We did not test that though so it’s all my speculation at this point in time!!
