There are many people running around lately saying things like: "The bushfires aren't caused by Australia. We're only 1.24% of global emissions. If we cut our emissions to zero, the bushfires would be worse anyway." Allow me to show why this is bollocks. x.com/samanthamaiden…

Just emerged from days of hell on sth coast, cannot believe attacks on ABC, It is the ONLY reliable source of info, everyone is tuned in, its real time broadcasting is saving lives, property and helping us understand our situation re fire threats, roads, petrol, food etc

My piece in the The Sydney Morning Herald today. Will be donating every cent I am paid for this towards those affected by the devastation. smh.com.au/national/never…

My sister just made the point that if Australia were a smaller country, like the size of a European one for example, climate refugees from these fires would be crossing national borders to try to reach safety. That is the scale of this disaster.

Thanks Jim! And I would add that despite the imperialist framers efforts to wipe out Indigenous people and sovereignty but many of those governments exist in some form today.

Those of us who have been in this emissions reduction game for a while will remember playing whack-a-mole with climate deniers who were armed with graphs cherry-picked to show a pause in warming since 1998. We saw this being credulously reported over and over for years.

@BigA19711971 I'm coming around to actually just caring about fossil fuel consumption ('Is it zero yet? Try harder.') Targets of any kind are just a political tool which invite resting on your laurels. At the end of the day, every Mt of CO2 re-introduced into the biosphere is doing harm.

1/ Many of you ask me why I take the COVID-19 outbreak so seriously. Current numbers of cases and deaths are *not* why. 👇 A thread on why I’m worried and what I do personally in this situation.

Academic peeps: I've lived through many disasters. Here is my advice on "productivity". First, play the long game. Your peers who are trying to work as normal right now are going to burn out fast. They're doomed. Make a plan with a longer vision. /1

Dear white people, For days you’ve asked me what you can do to help. I’ve finally found an answer. Let your guard down and listen.

The US Capitol hasn't been breached since 1814. The last time a President lost control of the White House was in 1829. When Jackson's inauguration party descended into a drunken riot: he left through a window and went to another party.
