1/3 Talking about the #Budget & #taxes: Our latest working paper applies Commitment to Equity methodology to SA's 2014/15 Living Conditions Survey to analyse the progressivity of main tax & social spending programmes & quantify impact on #poverty & #inequality: bit.ly/ACEIR-WP-7

This shocks me, from discussions w/ @GaiaScottGold & Josh Budlender: In SA, growth in food prices > GNI pc for many years. Using 2015 survey incomes, adjusting incomes by GNIpc & using each year's StatsSA poverty line, Food poverty rose from 20% to 24% *before* the pandemic.
(We don't have comparable annual estimates of poverty in SA! Eg, StatsSA pov brief in 2020 had to use 2015 survey: statssa.gov.za/?p=13438 @GaiaScottGold, Josh Budlender and I are trying to update this data, incl. looking into pov trends above -- hopefully more on this soon!)
