Really liked this text by Ben Ansell about Albania, Lea Ypi, and James Scott: benansell.substack.com/p/politics-is-… Last year, my summer holiday was almost identical to his: spent it in Albania and also read Lea Ypi's 'Free' — and I loved the country and loved the book.

It's not "only" child mortality that has declined. Infants, children, adults, and the elderly are all less likely to die than in the past. I wrote a brief data insight to explain this.

How common is homelessness across the world? Countries have very different rates of homelessness, according to the OECD’s Affordable Housing Database. The chart shows that more than 300 out of every 100,000 are reported homeless in France, while it’s fewer than 20 in Finland.

In 1995, treatment options for HIV were completely transformed. I made this chart with data from the NCHS, showing the impact of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). It profoundly improved the survival of people with HIV & reduced the risks of passing it on to others.

40 years ago HIV was invariably fatal: 100% of people with HIV died from the disease typically in a few years. Today antiretrovirals lead to near-normal life expectancy & prevent the virus's spread. It's estimated that antiretrovirals save over a million lives each year.
