The water is filtered under dimmed (red) light in order to measure the respiration of size classes of the plankton UEA School of Environmental Sciences UEA Research Dr Marta Maria Cecchetto @heriotwst
The plankton trapped on the filter papers is frozen in liquid nitrogen until analysis back at UEA School of Environmental Sciences Thanks to the filtering queen Dr Marta Maria Cecchetto Heriot-Watt University

Here we go! Early morning CTD and what a view 😍 ☀️ #DY180 BIO-Carbon Lyell Centre Heriot-Watt EGIS Heriot-Watt University

We’ve found the white water! This region looks like bright tropical water due to being “chalk” full of coccolithophores and their calcium carbonate liths, or shells. Just what we’ve been looking for on #DY180! Lyell Centre BIO-Carbon
Morning glow while waiting for the next CTD cast (yes, A N O T H E R) 🌊 Bring on the #phytoplankton! 💪🏼💪🏼 #DY180 #oceanography BIO-Carbon Lyell Centre Heriot-Watt University
UEA School of Environmental Sciences Dr Marta Maria Cecchetto from Heriot-Watt University collects and filters litres of water to measure the reduction of electrons in the electron transport system (ETS) chain. She uses four different filters so we can know who are the main respirers: bacteria, pico, nano or microplankton.
Happy #WorldOceanDay from #DY180! Thankful for the opportunity to continue learning about our ocean and the plankton living in it today. Lyell Centre Heriot-Watt University BIO-Carbon
The rain can’t stop us 🌧️ 💪🏼… Learning all about #phytoplankton with E.Elena GarciaMartin 🌊 BIO-Carbon #DY180 Heriot-Watt University Lyell Centre
Another successful recovery thanks to the amazing Discovery crew and techs! This time a drifting array measuring particle respiration BIO-Carbon #DY180
Final respiration profile this morning BIO-Carbon #DY180 Lots of sample analysis to do now …..
Got a bit too close to the rolling 🌊 BIO-Carbon UEA School of Environmental Sciences #DY180 homeward bound 😀
The crew, techs and scientists on BIO-Carbon #DY180 have all done a fantastic job - and we now have an enormous dataset on the biological contribution to ocean carbon storage to analyse!
