Can’t tell you the number of times I’ve been asked, “But what about an active shooter event?” by code officials when talking about single-stair buildings

Market Urbanism My parents contacted the local police in my hometown about what they could do if someone tried to squat in their house while they were out, or if someone decided to camp on their sidewalk.

Police said, 'not much' which is a lie!

Leaving aside the bleakness of this plan, there are so many wasted resources going into these ridiculous games necessary to take advantage of who knows what bonus or state law where you design a bunch of “game” and “study” rooms that later get converted to apartments (“ADUs”?)

Tales from Indian aunties and uncles in central PA: NY rent control/squatting is a surprisingly big topic of discussion! Unfortunate that our housing dysfunction is tarring Democrats around the country, without actually spurring state legislators to act in a reasonable way

This room is the size of two kids’ rooms in Europe. Two, and maybe all three, of those beds only touch one wall!! We’ve got the space, just not the rooms

Ceiling is exposed solaio in laterocemento. Used in Italy and Mexico (viguete y bovedilla). An ingenious floor system using prefab parts. I’d love to understand why it’s used in some countries but not others. 1st photo by Ari Heckman

The real triumph of the European Union isn’t the lack of tariffs or the lack of borders, but the free movement of people and the tearing down of non-tariff barriers to trade. Kinda pathetic that we can’t even get the easy stuff passed

These all have concrete (or maybe steel?) structures, which discourage complex forms compared to light wood frame (which is the 5 in 5-over-1)

Great examples of how Tradified 5-over-1s turn out in the real world. Look like shit.

To those who say 5-over-1s can look like Haussmannian Paris:
'Anything is possible when you don't know what you're talking about.'

No one who says that has ever done it, or even tried.

Matthew Yglesias Maybe the American Home Shield® analysis of Zillow data is more accurate than the HUD-Census Bureau American Housing Survey, but for those who are curious about the latter, it tends to show somewhat smaller housing units in the United States (only certain states are available):

Ryan Radia Stefan Schubert Hunter📈🌈 When you see GR housing almost twice as large as IT housing, you have to take a step back and ask wtf are we doing here. I’m also skeptical that IT housing could be smaller than ES housing, since more Spaniards live in apartments and ES’s been poorer than IT for all of modernity
