Live-attenuated measles virus (MeV) remains antigenically monotypic. Escape from serum neutralization requires elimination of at least 5 co-dominant antigenic sites in the Hemagglutinin (H)-glycoprotein. Emergence of new serotypes is highly unlikely. Mayo Clinic Miguel Ángel Muñoz-Alía
We've written a perspective on a new study by Miguel Ángel Muñoz-Alía that helps explain why some viruses (measles) don't evolve to escape immunity but others (influenza) do. Provides some clues relevant to future for #SARSCoV2 as well: cell.com/cell-reports-m… Here is a recap: (1/n)
Now Miguel Ángel Muñoz-Alía has completed the picture with a new study in Cell Reports Medicine showing that measles polyclonal antibodies have very broad activity, such that no single (or even double or triple) mutant has much reduction in neutralization (cell.com/cell-reports-m…). (11/n)

Absolutely delighted about #TWiV featuring our work on the constraints on measles antigenic evolution. Shout out to Bloom Lab, Cell Reports Medicine and Isabel Goldman for also giving visibility to our work.
"The fact it has happened twice in 18 months, two lineages (Alpha and then Delta) each 50% more transmissible is a phenomenal amount of change"—Aris Katzourakis bbc.com/news/health-57… by James Gallagher BBC Health News
*New paper alert* I'm happy to share that our manuscript "Masitinib is a broad coronavirus 3CL inhibitor that blocks replication of SARS-CoV-2" is now published in Science Magazine. you can find it here: science.sciencemag.org/content/early/…. I did a long thread for the preprint a year ago :)
