Any good estimates of current household attack rates for covid? Lots of anecdata on whole households catching within days, but would be good to see some formal analysis.

We need a term to describe the post acute, chronic, pandemic phase of covid that we are experiencing. I've seen too much semantic argument about whether we are at endemicity or not, and this fails to capture the erratic, and very long term process that we are at the start of.

Long🧵 and where we are. I’m worried.

We are entering the 5th year of the pandemic and we are certainly in a different phase. This phase is marked by an evolving virus (with the XBB and BA.2 sublineages circulating and JN.1 becoming dominant).

I still don't think it's correct to talk about an endemic state, but if this is roughly what it's going to look like..

If we continue to rely on the current generation of vaccines, do not innovate or update & simply rely on waves of infection for acquisition of immunity, that story may well take a very long time”

Do you think will end though, do you see an end in sight?

Aris Katzourakis “difficult question & part of the answer depends on what we do regarding immunization.

It can end & can end quickly if the new generation of vaccines comes along & quickly.”

Q: how & when is the pandemic going to end?

Aris Katzourakis sadly we don’t know, we need a period of regularity, without out-of-season peaks for at least a year
— won’t necessarily mean it will go away as a public health problem but does mean an endemic situation

It feels strange to celebrate at a time of devastation & anguish but just want to share & mark this historic moment when collective action has enabled justice for workers.

Today after several years of hard struggle for a fair & secure retirement income, we cemented the return…

While UCU successfully reversed the most recent erosion in USS pensions, much work remains to be done to avoid a repeat at the next valuation. Luckily, UCU has a tireless team of activists already working on that.

The cycling between deleted and undeleted versions of SARS-CoV-2 in positions 69-70 continues and is particularly intriguing from an evolutionary perspective; some important observations here:

🧵I’m standing for UCU GS because we desperately need change and an industrial strategy that is fit for purpose & equipped to deal with the challenges we face.
Over the last year I co-chaired UCU’s Climate & Ecological Emergency Committee (CEEC) with the fantastic @peterrhwood

Reading this piece and thinking, if people find this surprising, how have they been failed so badly by media narratives?
