If you’re wondering if you actually need to follow the real timeline of events in your paper - you don’t. You can switch figures around if it follows a more logical narrative or you want to start or end on something more compelling.

Understanding how your work will be evaluated is crucial for producing competitive papers and grants👇. Focus on the things you can change, and accept there are things you can't.

In case anyone is writing a paper to submit to Science and is worried about length, don't be. We got clarification from one of the editors there: the Abstract can be any reasonable length for initial sub. They don't decline a paper b/c of the length of the Abstract/text.

Don’t worry about word count when writing your first draft - it will change dramatically anyway. And don’t even worry about word count when submitting your paper. 9000 words for a 7000 limit is totally acceptable for a first submission. It’s more important to be understandable.
