Today I am editing the research proposal of one of my mentees, who is applying for the Simons Foundation postdoctoral fellowship.
The project is very exciting! Super cool research on biofilm-producing methanogens!
I love my job!

Yay team! 25 tree swallow nest boxes were put up in record time McMaster University forest to monitor pollution & climate change as part of my #newPI NSERC / CRSNG funded research program. Immediately after we were done, 4-5 swallows were inspecting them! Hopefully occupancy will be fast!

This evening most my lab left together. I assume for drinks. Without me. It makes me glad and sad. I’m sglad

This is my experience/ advice to #newPI 's doing basic science research and thinking about grant strategy. TL/DR; Apply for the NIGMS ESI MIRA in the first 6 months of your lab. Not doing so is one of the major regrets I have after starting my lab 4 years ago.
