As of Dec 2023, more than 230 children in the UK are waiting for an organ transplant 😮

Of those, 42 need a heart, with an average wait time of 2½ times longer than an adult on the urgent waiting list. For some children on the waiting list, a young donor is their only hope 🙏

Since diagnosed with chronic kidney disease, Charlie (13) has raised £17,000 for kidney charities to help children going through similar conditions 🫶

Figures show that parents are significantly less likely to donate their child’s organs for lifesaving transplants and here are some of the reasons ⬇️

In 2021/22, only 52% of families gave consent for their child’s organs to be donated.

Last week, eGenesis achieved a major medical milestone with the successful transplantation of a pig kidney into a human 🏥

Their gene-edited organ technology aims to begin trials for kidney, liver and heart transplants within the next two years.

With thousands awaiting transplants, spreading awareness through education is key, especially among our youth 🫶

Research has highlighted the important role young people can play in starting the conversation as they are usually more open-minded than adults about organ donation.

According to the NHS Blood+Transplant, there were 958 living donors in the UK in 22/23 🙌

In the past 20 years, living organ donations in the UK have trebled, accounting for 35% of transplants in 2019.

The NHS Blood+Transplant recently announced that more than 1,000 people in the UK have now donated a kidney anonymously to a stranger, with the 1,000th altruistic kidney donor being Neil Cheetham (59) from Devon, whose donation took place in 2023 🙌

Kay spearheaded a change to The Human Tissue Act of Sept 2006, allowing anonymous kidney donations & inspiring others to do the same.

23-year-old Ronald Herrick donated his kidney to his twin brother, Richard. 🫶

Most early living donors were biological relatives of the recipient to reduce the risk of organ rejection.
