I left school at 16 and went to work (1969). Never did A-levels. I went to University in 1974 as a ‘mature’ student, then again in 1987 to do a Masters (p/t) and finally a PhD (p/t) in 1992. By 1995 I was a Professor. There are other routes, even in academia.
