From all corners, Neolithic axes hold their own stories in stone across hundreds of miles & many of hours flaking then grinding. These tools, and the quarrying to make them had one of the first major impacts on the landscape in Britain just under 6000 years ago.

The west doorway of the monastic church at Kirkstall Abbey in Leeds, West Yorkshire. The Cistercian abbey was established on its present site in 1152 by monks from Fountains Abbey. 📸 My own.

The central panel of the 15thC alabaster altarpiece at Nottingham Castle showing the trinity is absolutely stunning. The top two angels are definitely censing with some menace though, you wouldn't want to get on the wrong side of them!

Housesteads was a auxiliary fort on Hadrian's Wall, at Housesteads, Northumberland. It is dramatically positioned on the end of the mile-long crag of the Whin Sill over which the Wall runs, overlooking sparsely populated hills.

3,000-year-old Egyptian flip-flops.
The pair of sandals was made from woven reeds and palm leaves, dating to around 1000 BC. They have been remarkably preserved due to the arid desert climate.

On display at the National Museum of Copenhagen.

The remains of the east gate defences of Piercebridge Roman Fort at Piercebridge in County Durham. The fort lies at a strategic point where Dere Street crossed the River Tees. 📸 My own.
